From Jim: I have been playing guitar and 5 string banjo for years. I have played guitar since high school and was a professional union musician in a couple of rock and roll groups post high school. We were very successful not only winning a few “battles of the bands”, but played throughout Ohio in a variety of venues, from bars to large field houses on university campuses and ballrooms. Over the years I got interested in 5 string banjo and enjoy playing that as well. I still play out with what I call an “old man” rock and roll band once I awhile.
Early in 2023 my wife suggested I check out a ukulele club. Now I participate in 4 and lead this one! It is a blast to do so!
My experience with guitar and banjo certainly made my transition to the ukulele easier. However, this instrument is one of the most accessible to learn to play, as I have witnessed many new players becoming proficient over the last year and a half. I have found the ukulele community overall to be a unique community. Unlike other groups which I belonged to in the past, these groups are open to all where you leave your ego at the door and just come into the comfort of a welcoming community. We learn together, sing together and strum together. What a joy it is to be a part of this larger singing and strumming global community!
